Sango Tajima is a Japanese-American actress, singer, writer, film-maker, director, producer and performer based in London. She is best known with American musical theatre company Team StarKid.

Early Life and Education[]

Sango was born in Ann Arbor and spent her childhood as a nomad, moving from Hawaii to Thailand to Trinidad & Tobago to Tanzania to Japan. She later attended the University of Michigan with a BFA in Acting. She later attended both Oklahoma City University and Goldsmiths, University of London where she graduated with an MA in Screen Acting and Filmmaking.

Work[]

Sango has featured in a large number of theatrical productions. In 2013, she featured as Becky Lou in Holy Crime and in 2014, she featured as Philipa / Lucky Lady in Year of the Rooster and as Monkey in Five Little Monkeys. In 2015 she featured as Orangutan in Water by the Spoonful (a role she reprised in 2022), Happy McClaine in Destination Home and Rosaura in Life is a Dream. In 2016 she featured as Mom in Clown Mama, Bad Kitty in Bad Kitty, Mowgli in The Jungle Book and Claudey in the world premiere of Stegosaurus (or) Three Cheers for Climate Change. In 2017 she featured as Miku in Crazy Girls Save the World (World Tour), Katya in We Are Pussy Riot, Jim / Sarah in The Mineola Twins, John Webster in Shakespeare in Love. In 2018 she featured as #25 in The Wolves, Sarah in the world premiere of In Braunau and Tori / Joe in Women Laughing Alone with Salad. In 2019 she featured as Ramona in Elevada, Roshni in the world premiere of House of Joy, Myrrah & Others in Metamorphoses and in 2022 she featured as Mac / Julio in the world premiere of Monument, or Four Sisters (A Sloth Play).

Sango has also featured in a number of web series and films. She featured as Gin in 15: Gin, Liz in Fern and Charlie in Burning. She also featured in commercials for VSP SunSync, CalPers Quick Tops, Raley's and Cisco Systems, Inc.

Sango has written a number of plays. She wrote and performed in The Rooted in 2013, the Live City Revue workshop in 2014 and unmami in 2021. She also contributed to the writing of the plays Through the Wall, Overnight, Rooted Stories of Belonging Inspired by Asian Elders in the Bay Area and Evolution. She also featured in some original / devised pieces: String Up The Moon, We Go Boom, PLACE to LAND (an Oakland love story) and skinship.

Sango has also conducted a large amount of work as a directer. She wrote and directed a number of projects which she featured in: she featured as herself in Where Are You From? and Tsuki in Blank Canvas. She also served as Assistant Director for never fall so heavily again, Another Way Home, Se Llama Cristina, Terminus and John. She also directed One Minute Play Festival and the staged reading of whisper fish[1].

StarKid Productions[]

Sango met the members of StarKid while collaborating in UoM's university's student-run theatre organization Basement Arts. In 2009 she featured in A Very Potter Musical as Lavender Brown. Sango then reprised her role as Lavender in both A Very Potter Sequel and A Very Potter Senior Year. She then returned to the group in 2019 to appear in StarKid Homecoming.
