Lauren Lopez (born March 8, 1986) is an American actress, singer, choreographer, dancer, and performer based in Los Angeles. She is best known for her work with American musical theatre company Team StarKid of which she was a founding member.

Early Life and Education[]

Lopez was born in Royal Oak, Michigan to a Jewish mother and Mexican father. She has an older brother. Lopez started competitive dancing when she was three years old and that was initially what she wanted to do when she grew up. Lopez got into theatre when she was a sophomore in high school to get her mother to stop nagging her to try it. She was cast as an understudy and maid in The Importance of Being Earnest that year. After that show, Lopez decided she wanted to continue to act in her school's plays and musicals. However, the moment she knew she wanted to be an actor was after seeing Medea (play), which Fiona Shaw starred in.

She was a goth in high school and reprised that memory by playing "Goth Party Girl" in A VHS Christmas Carol.

In 2009, she graduated from the BFA Acting program at the University of Michigan. She originally thought of herself as more of a dramatic actress before she started to get into comedy and character acting.

Work[]

Lopez has featured in a number of professional theatre productions appearing as Girl in J.B. at the University of Michigan, Saint Monica and Mother Teresa in Judas Redux: The Last Days of Judas Iscariot at Stage 773 in Chicago, Caliban in The Tempest at Studio/Stage Theatre, Los Angeles as part of the 2017 Hollywood Fringe Festival, and Lottie in Lottie Platchett Took A Hatchet at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2022.

She has also featured in a number of short films such as Clowns on Earth, Worthy and OMG She has also appeared in a number of feature length films such as The Spiral Project, Struck by Lightning and Passenger Seat. She has also featured in a number of TV series such as World's Worst Musical, Muzzled the Musical, Inside the Extras Studio, Sona and Stellar People. She also featured in an episode of Royalties, the TVseries created by Darren Criss and written by Nick and Matt Lang.

Lauren has also collaborated with StarKid's sister company the Tin Can Brothers for many years. She has featured as Cynthia and Mrs Mega in Spies Are Forever, alongside choreographing the show. She also appeared as Esther in The Solve it Squad returns, a role she reprised in the live readings of The Solve It Squad Back in Biz. Lauren has also appeared in the cast of both the Tin Can Brothers' short film Idle Worship and well as their talk show comedy play We Didn't Plan to Kill Our Guest alongside appearing as Agnes Florentine in their web series Wayward Guide for the Untrained Eye. She also served as first assistant director on their musical short film Flop Stoppers.

Lauren has also collaborated with Shipwrecked Comedy. She featured as in Edgar Allan Poe's Murder Mystery Dinner Party as George Eliot. She is also due to appear in their web series Headless: A Sleepy Hollow Story as one of the Headless Horseman's head.

Lauren also collaborated with fellow StarKid Julia Albain in creating a comedy play called The Moms': Fannypacking Heat which she wrote and featured in.

Lauren also wrote a cookbook containing gluten and dairy-free recipes entitled These Treats Don't Suck which was published in 2013.

StarKid Productions[]

Lauren met the members of StarKid while collaborating in UoM's university's student-run theatre organization. Their first play was based on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, where she played Frodo Baggins. The show succeeded in developing a working relationship among the StarKids-to-be. At that point, there was no concept that they were in some sort of troupe — they were just friends with each other in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance. In 2007, Lauren featured in the pre-StarKid web series Little White Lie as Tanya Freemont.

In 2009, Lauren featured in A Very Potter Musical. Despite initially being considered for the role of Hermione Granger, Lopez was cast as Draco Malfoy. The show sold out its four performances at UMich. A recorded version of the show that was posted on YouTube for family members to watch went viral and her performance as Draco resulted in Lopez becoming a firm fan favourite. In response to the musicals popularity StarKid Productions was formed, named after one of Lopez's lines in the show, with Lopez as one of it's founding members.

Lauren went on to reprise her role as Malfoy in A Very Potter Sequel and A Very Potter Senior Year. Lopez has since gone on to appear in nine more StarKid musicals, 3 national tours, 3 concerts, 2 seasons of the livereading series Nightmare Time as well as appearing in the livestreamed musical A VHS Christmas Carol, it's live version VHS Christmas Carol Live! and the full-length version VHS Christmas Carols. Lauren also featured in the short film Workin' Boys as Linda Monroe, Ruth Fleming and Courtney.

Lauren choreographed for Nerdy Prudes Must Die as well as providing additional choreography for The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals and directing the music video for Virginity Rocks in Nightmare Time 2. Lauren also served as choreographer for Workin' Boys.
